Yakima Valley
Mel Moore dedicated decades to high school athletics and youth sports in the Yakima area, leaving a lasting legacy as a volunteer, coach, and tournament manager. A graduate of Kiona-Benton High School, he attended Wenatchee Valley College from 1962 to 1964, playing football under legendary coach Tom Parry and basketball for Frank Mataya. After college, Moore moved to Yakima and volunteered for more than 30 years with the youth baseball program. He also coached AAU basketball and contributed to numerous other community and sporting events.
Moore became widely recognized for his leadership in managing state championship tournaments. Beginning in 1993, he served as Tournament Manager for the WIAA State Baseball Championships at Yakima County Stadium, marking a 21-year tenure by 2013—the longest for any baseball championship site. In addition, he assisted with the State Basketball Tournament for 15 years and contributed to the 1B, 2B, and 1A State Volleyball Tournaments from 1998 onward, as well as State Dance/Drill events.
In recognition of his dedication, Moore received the Curt and Chee Chee Bruskland Service Award in 2010, honoring individuals who exemplify exceptional service to the WIAA and its member schools. Colleagues have praised Moore as a tireless volunteer whose deep sense of community pride and love for youth make events run seamlessly and meaningfully.
Through his decades of service, Moore impacted countless student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and fans, supporting their pursuit of success both on and off the field. He and his wife, Vicki, have lived in Yakima for more than four decades and have raised three children—Dale, Brenda, and Daryl—and now enjoy four grandchildren: Caleb, Ally, Benton, and Clara.
