Franklin HS Football, Basketball, Baseball

Ron Santo, a 1958 graduate of Franklin High School, is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players ever produced by the state of Washington. A standout three-sport athlete, Santo earned six varsity letters across football, basketball, and baseball, including four in baseball. He led Franklin to three City Championships (1955–1957) and two Postseason Championships (1956–1957), while earning three All-City baseball selections.

Santo’s professional career with the Chicago Cubs spanned 15 years, during which he was a nine-time Major League All-Star, a five-time Gold Glove winner, and hit 342 career home runs—the most of any player from Washington. He is one of only three Cubs players to have his number retired and has been inducted into the Italian-American, Franklin High School, and Chicago Halls of Fame.

Despite being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes shortly after signing his professional contract, Santo played his entire career while taking daily insulin injections. Later in life, complications from the disease led to the amputation of both legs below the knee, yet he devoted himself to philanthropy, helping raise over $50 million for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

After his playing career, Santo became the radio broadcaster for the Cubs, remaining a passionate ambassador for the team and the sport. His legacy as an athlete, role model, and advocate continues to inspire generations.
