CLASS OF 2004 INDUCTEE

Wilson HS Swimming

Dick Hannula stands as one of the most accomplished high school coaches in Washington state history, leaving an indelible mark on swimming both statewide and nationally. Beginning his coaching career in 1952, Hannula built a dynasty at Wilson High School where his teams went undefeated in 323 meets and captured an astonishing 24 consecutive state championships—the second-longest streak in National Federation of State High School Associations’ history. He later led Lincoln High School to two additional boys state titles, further cementing his legacy as a coaching legend.

Beyond high school competition, Hannula contributed to the development of American swimming on the international stage. He coached four U.S. Olympic team swimmers, including Kaye Hall, an Olympic and world-record holder in the 100-meter backstroke. His expertise also guided Pan-American Games teams and five U.S. International swim teams, and he served as a manager for two U.S. Olympic teams and one Pan-American Games team.

Hannula’s coaching excellence earned him national recognition, including National High School Coach of the Year in 1980 and the NISCA National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy that same year. His remarkable career has been honored with inductions into both the NISCA and International Swimming Halls of Fame, a testament to his enduring influence on athletes and the sport itself.
