Lakeside School Basketball

Sandy Schneider was a standout athlete, coach, and educator whose career left a lasting impact on Washington high school athletics. She played basketball for four years and tennis for two at Bishop Blanchet High School, participating in the first state tennis tournament for girls. After graduating in 1972, Schneider continued her athletic career at the University of Washington in basketball and volleyball before accepting an athletic scholarship at Central Missouri State University, becoming part of the first class post–Title IX to receive basketball scholarships. At CMSU, she served as team captain, earned two letters in basketball, and one letter each in cross country and track and field, finishing fifth in the state in the 800 meters. She also became a graduate assistant coach in basketball and track and field in 1977 and was later named to the CMSU “Team of the Decade.”

Schneider joined Lakeside High School in 1979, teaching physical education and serving as a coach and athletic administrator for both the Upper and Middle Schools for 31 years. She coached basketball for 26 seasons, compiling a record of 473–205–1. Her teams won nine league championships, eight district championships, and five state championships, with 17 teams advancing to the state tournament, including a record-setting streak of 10 consecutive appearances. She received numerous coaching honors, including a nomination for PI Sports Star of the Year (1991), Seattle Times State Coach of the Year (2003), the John Wooden Coaches Wall of Fame, and the 101 Club Coaches Award (2009). She was inducted into the Bishop Blanchet Hall of Fame in 2011 and the CMSU Hall of Fame in 2012.

Beyond her accomplishments in the classroom and on the court, Schneider was a mentor to other coaches and a leader in creating expanded athletic opportunities for students. She advocated for programs like rowing to extend from the high school to middle school and inspired generations of young athletes through her dedication, expertise, and focus on their growth. Sandy Schneider’s commitment to teaching, coaching, and leadership established her as one of the most successful and respected basketball coaches in Washington state history.
