Pasco HS Football, Baseball, Track & Field

Carl Talmadge “Duke” Washington first made his mark in athletics at Pasco High School (1948–1951), where he was a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, baseball, and track. In 1951, he became the first Black student-athlete selected for the All-State football team and the first to play in the state’s all-star football game.

Washington went on to accept a football scholarship at Washington State University, where he became just the third Black athlete to play football for the Cougars. In 1954, he made history as the first Black player to compete in Texas Memorial Stadium at the University of Texas. As a senior, he earned multiple honors, including the J. Fred Bohler Inspirational Player Award, the Inland Empire Athlete of the Year Award, and a roster spot on the West Team in the prestigious East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco.

After earning a B.A. in Interior Design, Washington was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but instead chose to serve two years in the U.S. Army. He later returned to Washington, completed his teaching credentials, and went on to a long career as a teacher and coach in the Seattle Public Schools.

Washington’s legacy has been honored through multiple Hall of Fame inductions: Pasco High School (1996), the Central Washington Sports Hall of Fame (2004), and the Washington State University Athletics Hall of Fame (2009).

Washington passed away in February at the age of 84. His life and career continue to stand as a source of inspiration for student-athletes and educators across the state.
