Walla Walla HS Basketball, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball

Jeanne Eggart Helfer distinguished herself as one of the most versatile and accomplished athletes in Washington state history. At Walla Walla High School, she competed in four sports—basketball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball—earning statewide and national recognition. On the basketball court, she led her teams to a remarkable 56–6 record over three seasons and three consecutive state tournament appearances, finishing second twice and third once. A two-time First Team All-State selection and a 1977 high school All-American, she averaged 25.1 points per game across her career, cementing her place among the state’s elite scorers. She also excelled in track and field, where she was state champion in the javelin and ranked among the top javelin throwers in the nation. In volleyball, she was a two-time team Most Valuable Player, while in tennis she captured a district championship. Her athletic success was matched by her academic achievement, graduating with a 3.77 grade-point average.

Eggart Helfer continued her athletic career at Washington State University, where she made history as the first female athlete to earn a scholarship. On the basketball team, she quickly became a record-setter, finishing her career with 1,967 points—at the time the most in program history. She left WSU with records for scoring average (18.4 points per game), field goals, free throws, assists, and steals, establishing herself as one of the greatest players in Cougar history. She also competed in track and field, setting a school record in the javelin with a throw of 178-3 as a sophomore—a record that still stands. In 1980, she took a year away from basketball to train for the Olympics and went on to place fourth in the javelin at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Following her collegiate career, Eggart Helfer turned to coaching, where she built one of the most successful girls’ basketball programs in Washington. At Mead High School and later Mount Spokane High School, she guided her teams to eight top-four finishes at the state tournament, including three state championships in 1990, 1992, and 1996, as well as a runner-up finish in 1991. Through her leadership and knowledge, she not only developed championship teams but also inspired generations of young athletes to excel on and off the court.
