VIRGINIA GREENLEE
COACH
CLASS OF 2010 INDUCTEE
Renton HS Volleyball
Virginia Greenlee played a pioneering role in the early days of high school volleyball in Washington. In 1973, she hosted the first state invitational tournament at Renton High School, and went on to direct the first four official WIAA state volleyball tournaments. Her leadership and vision helped establish the foundation for the sport’s growth and recognition across the state.
On the court, Greenlee guided Renton High School’s volleyball program for six seasons. During that time, her teams won three league championships, made four trips to the state tournament, and captured one state title. Her success was paired with a reputation for organization, leadership, and passion for the game.
Her impact reached beyond coaching. From 1978 to 1988, Greenlee served as assigning secretary of officials for the Seattle board, helping to strengthen the structure and integrity of the sport. Her efforts were widely recognized: she was named Washington State Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1977, honored by the Washington State Athletic Directors Association in 1978, received the WIAA Service Award in 1979, and was nominated for National High School Coach of the Year.
Even after retiring from coaching in 1978, Greenlee’s legacy continued to grow. She was inducted into the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006 and received the WIAA Appreciation Award in 1990 for her outstanding contributions to schools and students across Washington.
