Federal Way HS Cross Country, Track & Field

Bill Harris has been a transformative figure in Washington high school track and field and cross country. Beginning his teaching career at Federal Way High School, Harris taught math while also dedicating himself to athletics. He started as an assistant coach in 1963 before taking over as head coach for track and field and cross country in 1965.

During his tenure, Harris led his teams to remarkable success: six Girls Track League Championships, 10 Girls Cross Country Championships, and two track and field State Team Championships. His athletes achieved 12 individual state championship records under his guidance, reflecting his skill in developing both talent and character.

After retiring from teaching in 1996, Harris served as Federal Way High School’s athletic director from 1997-1999. He has also contributed extensively to the broader track and field community as the West Central District III co-manager for the combined 3A-4A track meet, overseeing well over 800 participants.

Harris’s impact has been recognized through numerous honors, including the West Central District III Meritorious Service Award in 2002, the Washington State Track and Field Hall of Fame induction in 2007, and the Federal Way School District Hall of Fame induction in 2008. His legacy is one of dedication, leadership, and excellence in both athletics and education.
