Mike Burton’s remarkable career spans over four decades in education, coaching, and officiating, leaving an indelible mark on Washington high school athletics and forensics. A master teacher, Burton received the prestigious Golden Apple Award from KCTS Channel P and Pemco Insurance in recognition of his excellence in education.
Burton’s career as a debate coach began in Auburn and concluded at Eastside Catholic, with both programs earning national recognition under his leadership. He guided students to 36 state championships and earned numerous accolades, including the Bruno Jacob Award for service, induction into the University of Kentucky Tournament of Champions Hall of Fame, the 1995 NFHS Instructor of the Year, the 2000 NFHS National Citation Award for Officiating, the 2004 Minnesota Coaches Golden Apple for Excellence in Forensics, the 2007 National Forensic League Living Legends Award, and the 2007 Bronx Achievement Award.
Beyond coaching, Burton shaped policy and programs throughout Washington and across the nation with his leadership and expertise. He served on the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Forensics Committee for 14 years, the National Catholic Forensics League Executive Committee, the Executive Board of the National Forensics League (1996–2000), and the Washington Officials Association Executive Board (1985–2007). He was President of the National Federation of Officials in 1998 and was recognized for officiating excellence with the NFHS Citation Award in 2000. In 2009, Burton was inducted into the Washington Officials Association Hall of Fame.
