CLASS OF 2009 INDUCTEE
Interlake HS Baseball, Golf
John Olerud’s remarkable baseball career began at Interlake High School, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete, lettering in golf and baseball. On the diamond, Olerud quickly established himself as a standout player, leading his team to the KingCo title game as a junior with a .435 batting average and a pitching record of 9-2 with a 1.54 ERA. In his senior year, he earned All-KingCo and All-State honors, and was named the MVP Offensive Player of the All-State game.
Olerud continued his baseball success at Washington State University, where he set numerous school and Pac-10 records. In 1987, he batted .414 while compiling an 8-2 pitching record with a 3.80 ERA and represented the United States on the National Team at the Intercontinental Cup in Havana, Cuba. He was named Intercollegiate Baseball Player of the Year by Baseball America in 1988. Remarkably, during his junior season, Olerud overcame a brain aneurysm to hit .359 despite playing only half the season.
Selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1989, Olerud made an immediate impact at the professional level. He was American League Rookie of the Year in 1990 and a member of the 1990 World Series–champion Blue Jays. He went on to win the 1993 National League Batting Championship with the New York Mets, and earned multiple All-Star selections along with Golden Glove Awards at first base with the Seattle Mariners.
Off the field, Olerud has dedicated himself to giving back, supporting Make-A-Wish and visiting children’s hospitals. His combination of skill, perseverance, and character has made John Olerud a lasting inspiration in Washington baseball and beyond.
