MEAD BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
TEAM/PROGRAM
CLASS OF 2010 INDUCTEE
Few programs in Washington history have matched the sustained excellence of the Mead High School boys cross country team. From 1976 through 2008, the Panthers built a dynasty that captured 15 WIAA state championships and added seven runner-up finishes, cementing their place among the nation’s elite high school distance programs.
Mead claimed its first state title in 1976 and went on to dominate the sport, highlighted by an unprecedented streak of nine consecutive state championships from 1988 to 1996. Over that span, the Panthers also collected 17 league titles, and Mead runners won 10 individual state championships, a testament to both team depth and individual excellence.
The program’s success is also a story of leadership, with four coaches guiding Mead during this era of dominance: Duane Hartman, Tom Buckner, Pat Tyson, and current head coach Steve Kiesel. Together, they built a culture of tradition, toughness, and teamwork that became a model for cross country programs statewide and beyond.
